Homeowner Stories

When Spencer and Missy moved to Charlottesville a couple of years ago, they weren’t sure if they could find a house that suited them.  Spencer wanted to live in the city, close enough to bike or walk to his teaching job at UVa.   Missy wanted a house that was relatively maintenance-free.  The choices seemed minimal until their real estate agent pointed out a small new development in the Fry’s Spring neighborhood.  It was a cul-de-sac of nine new homes, tucked away yet convenient to almost everything.  As one of the first families to commit to building there, Missy and Spencer were able to customize their Craftsman-style bungalow to fit their needs as new empty-nesters.  They especially appreciated the personal approach of the folks at Dickerson Homes and are now happily situated in their new community.

“We like the fact that we’re dealing with a smaller company, where we know everyone’s names, and they know ours. It made the process much more enjoyable.”

After 9 years of working and living in Nelson county, Megan and Luke were ready to leave the DIY renovation projects behind with their mid-century home and make the jump to the “big city” to be closer to the activities, parks, shopping, and restaurants that Charlottesville has to offer. During their home search, they came across Dickerson Homes & Development and the Evangeline development in its early stages. Through DH&D’s process they had plenty of options for adding personal touches and customization such as a corner fireplace and built-in bookcases. The option to add a basement to the floor plan gave them the extra storage space they wanted.

“From the very first meeting we felt that the team’s top priority was building a quality house that suited our needs, our budget, and our wish list. We are very pleased with our decision to build a new home with DH&D.”

Although Dennis and Linda knew they wanted to live in Charlottesville, they did not really view any homes in town prior to when they sold their home in Northern Virginia in the first weekend! The first house they visited was DH&D’s home being built in Avon Park. They loved the Craftsman exterior, the multiple views of Carter mountain, the quality of the construction, and the large open configuration on the first floor along with the good sized bedrooms on the second floor. After viewing quite a few other homes later that day, they were most impressed by DH&D’s home and reputation, so they submitted an offer the same day. They appreciated DH&D’s flexibility in converting the planned garage into a family room and now find the house is perfectly suited to their retired life.

“Everyday we wake up to views of Carter mountain and are grateful for our beautiful home, rich with Craftsman detail.”

Pete & Meg wanted to move closer to downtown and be a part of a diverse community while being able to be within walking distance to the Downtown Mall, their son’s school, and their respective work locations. Belmont was the perfect fit! After selling their home in record time, they quickly decided to purchase with DH&D during the early phases of construction. Pete & Meg were able to personalize the home with custom selections during the construction process as well as building a few things of their own, like a large sandbox, after they moved in.

“The attention to detail, and allowing for our input was what made working with DH&D so great.”

Tara and her sweet baby girl met the DH&D team at our open house and quickly decided that Andrew needed to come see the house. They were looking for their first home together and wanted quality construction within the city and beautiful mountain views – this Palatine home was the perfect fit. They love the spacious deck and large backyard. Within a few days Tara & Andrew personalized the home to their taste by adding new light fixtures and a little bit of paint. They also furnished the space with custom made furniture, hand-built by Andrew himself!

“The layout just made sense.  It was open, yet cozy.  We have truly come to appreciate the team and the quality work they do.”

Tiffany and Luan didn’t think planning a destination wedding in New York was enough excitement, so they decided to buy their first home together too.  They originally met with DH&D to find a suitable rental, but quickly decided to build their first home from the ground up (literally) in Belmont. Since they came into the home building process as a pre-sale, they were able to customize their home by making many of the selections — from cabinets to granite to house & carpet color! They closed on their home just 3 days after their wedding; it was a perfect way to start life together (and a great “wedding present”).

“We love the location and the layout of our home–it’s perfect for entertaining!”

A few years after returning to Charlottesville to plant Portico Church, Chris & Jenn decided to move from Crozet into the heart of the city.  DH&D was already pursuing the purchase of a home we knew would be the perfect fit for their family of 5: a brick ranch with a basement in the Greenbrier neighborhood. The revised floor plan called for the addition of a larger kitchen, master suite, and two bathrooms as well as a fully finished  basement and several built-in features.  After a couple of months, Chris, Jenn and their three beautiful girls moved into a new home, customized to their lifestyle and tastes.

“The built-in banquet was the perfect solution to replacing a formal dining room without sacrificing space.”

While walking through the Rosehill/Greenleaf neighborhood with a group of friends, Christie noticed a home (which had previously been very much in need of some TLC) being completely gutted and renovated.  It’s convenient location and large corner lot were as compelling as the new finishes and revised floor plan.  Only a few weeks after touring it during an open house, Christie made Greenleaf her home.

“Christie’s decorating skills and green thumb have made her new house, a home.”
